What is impermanent loss?
Impermanent loss is the difference between what your liquidity position is worth right now and what you'd have if you'd just held the original tokens instead of depositing them into the pool. It happens because a Uniswap pool automatically rebalances your two tokens as the price moves — selling the one that's going up, buying the one that's going down — relative to just holding both. It's called "impermanent" because it only becomes a realized loss if you withdraw while it's negative; if the price returns to where it was when you deposited, the loss shrinks back toward zero.
FAQ
- How does this tool calculate impermanent loss?
- For each position, we read your original deposited amounts, current liquidity, and price range straight from the Uniswap V3 subgraph and on-chain contract state — not typed-in guesses. We use Uniswap's own @uniswap/v3-sdk to compute your current token0/token1 split from the pool's live price, then compare that to what your originally-deposited amounts would be worth today if never LPed (the "HODL value"), both expressed in terms of one of the pool's two tokens. That avoids needing an external USD price feed for the core math, which is one less place for numbers to drift from reality.
- Why might these numbers differ slightly from Uniswap's app or other trackers?
- Small differences usually come from timing — subgraph indexing lags the chain tip by a block or few — or from how "fees earned" is defined. We show fees already withdrawn via collect() separately from fees accrued-but-not-yet-collected (read live via an on-chain simulation), and add them together for a total. If a tracker only shows one of those, the numbers won't match until you actually collect.
- Do I need to connect my wallet?
- No. You paste a public wallet address and we read public on-chain data — there's no wallet connect, no signature request, and no custody of funds. This tool can't move your money because it never asks to.
- What chains and pairs are supported?
- Ethereum mainnet and Base, Uniswap V3 only. The underlying math works for any ERC-20 pair, but v1 has been built and tested against major pairs (ETH/USDC, WBTC/ETH, stablecoin pairs) — exotic or rebasing tokens may display but haven't been thoroughly vetted, so treat those numbers with extra caution.
- What does "out of range" mean for my position?
- Uniswap V3 lets you concentrate liquidity into a specific price range instead of the whole curve. While the pool's current price is inside your chosen range, your position earns fees and holds a mix of both tokens. Once price moves outside that range, your position stops earning fees and sits entirely in one token until price moves back in — we flag this clearly since it's easy to miss.
